Intro Text

The Archdiocese of Atlanta encompasses the northern half of Georgia covering 21,445 square miles. It is a vibrant, diverse and rapidly growing Catholic community serving 1.2 million Catholics.  The history of the Archdiocese goes back to the late 1700s.  Originally part of the Diocese of Savannah, Atlanta was made a Diocese in 1956 and made an Archdiocese in 1962. The Most Reverend Wilton D. Gregory, S.L.D. is the Archbishop of Atlanta.  On December 9, 2004, Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop Gregory as the sixth archbishop of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. He was installed on January 17, 2005.
